Estimating the burden of disease attributable to diabetes in South Africa in 2000
Abstract
Diabetes, a disease with significant morbidity and premature mortality, is affecting increasing numbers of people worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that in 1998 there were 135 million people with diabetes.1 The estimate rose to 171 million people in 2000 and has been projected to increase to 366 million in 2030.
